Am I Too Young for Life Insurance? Not Even Close. Here’s Why.

Let’s be honest, when we were in our 20s and 30s, we didn’t even want to talk about life insurance. We were busy building careers, relationships, and maybe families. Most people think life insurance is for later, when you’re older, have kids, or buy a house.
But here’s the truth: life insurance is actually smarter (and cheaper) the earlier you get it.
But… Do I really need life insurance if I’m young and healthy?
It’s a great question. Here’s what many of us think:
- “I’m healthy, I’ve got time.”
- “I don’t have kids yet, so it doesn’t apply to me.”
- “I’m not planning to die anytime soon.”
Fair enough. But here’s another truth: life doesn’t always follow our plans.
Early in my career, I lost a family member in a tragic accident at just 28 years old. His parents owned a business that suffered deeply while they dealt with the grief. They never financially recovered. A life insurance policy wouldn’t have eased their heartbreak, but it could’ve eased the pressure, helping them cover costs, keep the business going, and take time to heal.
So… why get life insurance now?
1. It’s way cheaper when you’re young.
Premiums are based on age and health. If you’re young and healthy today, you can lock in low rates for life. It’s kind of a no-brainer.
2. You can build savings with it.
If you’re looking long-term, Universal Life insurance can grow cash value over time. Pay a little more now, and that value compounds for years. Some plans (like a 20-Pay) let you finish payments by your 40s or 50s, when life insurance normally gets expensive.
3. You lock in your insurability.
Here’s the kicker: you can’t buy life insurance after something happens. A health diagnosis, a new medication, a dangerous hobby, even family medical history can make you uninsurable. Buying young locks in your right to be covered, even if things change later.
